Cervical Cancer
This is My Story -  Pass It On

"I didn’t realize the risk was even there…Still, it could have been a lot worse – at least I’ve had my kids. Recently, I had a hysterectomy because I had cancer of the cervix.

"Now I realize how important Pap Tests are. With the test, doctors can identify and treat abnormalities before they develop into cancer. I wish I’d known that a few years ago.

"It’s too late for me, but don’t let this happen to you. Take the first step and get a Pap Test."

This is my story.  Pass it on.

"I didn’t think I still needed to have Pap Tests at my age. I mean, I’ve gone through menopause and, well, Jim’s not around anymore…Who knew that women my age could still get cancer of the cervix?

"I certainly didn’t…but luckily for me, my friend did.  She told me that with Pap Tests, doctors can identify and treat abnormalities before they develop into cancer of the cervix.

"Now I’m back to getting regular Pap Tests…and you should too."

This is my story.  Pass it on.

"I just had my first Pap Test. I’ve got to tell you, I was dreading it, but you know, it wasn’t so bad. It didn’t even hurt and it was over in no time.

"Everyone was so nice. The doctor talked me through it and the nurse stayed with me the whole time.  And I feel better knowing that the parts of me that I can’t see are healthy too.

"You know, Pap tests can prevent cancer of the cervix – so go get one. It isn’t as bad as you think."

This is my story.  Pass it on.

"I’d never heard of cancer of the cervix. But that was before my Mom died of it last year. Now that I’ve been talking to others and learning more, I’ve discovered that this type of cancer can be prevented with regular Pap Tests.

"You see, doctors can identify abnormalities and treat them before they ever develop into cancer of the cervix…I sure wish I’d known that earlier.

"My advice to you is to tell the women you love to get a Pap Test."

This is my story.  Pass it on.

"Here I am – in the prime of my life – time to look after myself – eat right, exercise and be smoke-free.  I’m generally healthy apart from a few aches and pains but one thing I hadn’t done since my last child was born was have a pap test.  I’ve always hated that test, and anyway, I didn’t have any signs or symptoms to worry about.

"Then I find out that you can have abnormal cells that can change into cancer cells without any symptoms.  So as I’m in the “take care of myself mode”, I decided to go for my pap.  And now I’m glad I did.  The cells were abnormal.  I had to go for repeat paps and other tests and treatments which took months.  But at least it didn’t develop into cancer of the cervix.

"Please share my story about the importance of pap testing with your friends.  I know pap tests aren’t our favourite thing to do but this is one cancer we can beat.  I have learned cancer of the cervix is preventable. Check out these websites for yourself: www.cancer.ca or www.cancercare.on.ca"
