Prevention and Early Detection of Cancer

 

It Could Save Your Life!

 

More than half of all cancer cases could be prevented according to Cancer Care Ontario and the Canadian Cancer Society.  Here are some tips to help reduce your risk of cancer.

 

q       Enjoy 5 to 10 servings of vegetables and fruits each day.

q       Take part in 30 – 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity most days of the week.

q       Attain or maintain a healthy body weight.

q       Be smoke-free.  Avoid second hand smoke; if you smoke keep trying to stop until you succeed.

q       Limit alcohol intake if you drink.

q       Use a waterproof sunscreen with a SPF of 15 or more

q       Regular pap tests can prevent most cancer of the cervix.  Women should have

 regular pap tests until at least age 70.

q       Regular breast screening in women 50 and over saves lives.  Call the Ontario Breast Screening Program at 519-881-4030 or 519-376-8637.

q       Both men and women 50 or more should discuss screening for colorectal cancer with their Family Physician.

q       Men 50 or more should talk about prostate screening with their Family Physician.

q       If you have a family history of breast, colorectal or prostate cancer discuss with your health care professional screening at an earlier age.
