Gum Disease

If your gums bleed easily when brushing you could have an early sign of gum disease (gingivitis).  This is an infection that attacks the supporting structures of teeth-the gums, bone and ligaments.

Gum disease is caused by plaque which is a sticky film, made up of mostly bacteria, that forms on teeth.  Plaque build-up initiates the infection that causes gum tissues to become red, puffy and bleed easily.  If not removed, the plaque gradually hardens into calculus (tartar) and spaces develop between the gums and teeth.  These spaces are called pockets.  Plaque collects in these pockets and is virtually impossible to remove.  If the disease progresses, teeth will become loose and fall out (periodontitis).  Gum disease may also contribute to serious conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease and premature and low weight babies.

Gum disease can be prevented with daily brushing/flossing, eating a balanced diet and seeing your dentist or dental hygienist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
