Smoking and Oral Health

Surprisingly, many smokers need to be made more aware of the dangers of tobacco use and their oral health.  Tobacco use may be one of the most significant risk factors in the development and progression of periodontal disease.  In addition, following any oral surgery or gum treatment, chemicals in tobacco can slow down the healing process.

Smokers are more likely to have calculus (hardened plaque), deep pockets and loss of bone that supports the teeth.  If calculus is not professionally removed, it can cause your gums to pull away from your teeth creating a pocket.  A toothbrush can’t clean the deep pockets.  Gums tend to recede and the teeth eventually become loose.  Research shows that smokers loose more teeth than non-smokers.

Other Oral Problems Associated With Tobacco Use:

  • Oral cancer.

  • Bad breath.

  • Stained teeth.

  • Loss of taste.

  • Less success with periodontal treatments and implants.

  • Gum recession.

  • Mouth sores.

  • Facial wrinkling.

Tobacco products such as smokeless tobacco, cigars and pipes can also be harmful to your oral health.
