Tooth Decay

After the common cold, tooth decay is one of the most widespread diseases.  The decay process begins when normal mouth bacteria (plaque) mix with food (sugars) that we eat to produce an acid.  The acid, if left on teeth, can destroy tooth enamel.  Surprisingly, tooth decay is also an infectious disease.  Sharing cups, utensils etc. can pass on decay causing bacteria to others.

To prevent tooth decay:

  • Brush at least two times a day.  Floss once a day.

  • Use a smear of fluoridated toothpaste when the first tooth erupts.

  • See the dentist regularly.

  • Eat healthy foods and limit the intake of sugar.

  • As parents, you should have a healthy clean mouth to prevent the transmission of bacteria to children.

  • Be a good role model for tooth brushing.
