Home Support Exercise Program for PSW's

This is an home exercise program designed for older adults who have difficulty getting out their home to exercise. This is a free educational opportunity for Personal Support Workers and Volunteers. Grey Bruce FOCUS

Grey-Bruce has been chosen to be one of eight locations in the province to participate with the Older Persons’ Mental Health and Addictions Network (OPMHAN) to provide two workshops, “Raising Awareness About Older Adults’ Problematic Substance Use”.  One workshop will be for service providers to heighten awareness of the many complexities of substance use among older adults as well as provide strategies for reducing problematic substance use and effectively assisting those at risk of the effects of drugs and alcohol.  The other workshop will be an educational opportunity for seniors and their families, “Medications, Alcohol and Health:  Give me the Information – I’ll Decide”.  Date to be announced.

Registration info: Tales By The Brook has a critter village, story centre and tea room, as well as trails through Jason's (wild flower) Meadow, natural marsh and The Garden of Angels (memorial garden). This will be the second annual community day. The usual minimum donation of $5.00 per person will be waived. Community members, friends and family can enjoy the day. Some of the FOCUS Coalition Partners have agreed to bring displays and handouts suitable for all ages. OSAID (Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving) have tentatively agreed to sell hotdogs as a fundraiser for their initiatives.

You will be guided through our critter village and have an opportunity to feed the goats, hear about the backgrounds of the variety of critters who live here and see first hand the antics of our critters.

Noon–3:00 p.m.           Enjoy the displays.  Explore the Garden of Angels, Jason’s Meadow and the natural marsh area.

Snowbirds promoting “No More Accidents”

Registration info: This is a rare opportunity to hear and speak with the Snowbird crew as they discuss “No More Accidents” and smart risk-taking.

Registration info: Grey Bruce Partners In Health in partnership with Ontario Power Generation will be setting up a Healthy Living Tent which will contain interactive displays, fresh water and water bottles.

 


Preventing Falls Workshop

Date    Saturday, June 12

Time    all day workshop-registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Place   Pentecostal Church on Hwy. 9 south of Walkerton

Registration info: The focus will be on the role that exercise can play to prevent falls in older adults who have chronic illnesses such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, osteoporosis, arthritis and Alzheimer's disease.

Cost    FREE

Registration info: Come and have your child’s car seat checked, free of charge.  All participants are entered into a free draw for a high-back booster seat.  Fun activities for the kids.  No appointment necessary-first come first served.  This clinic is sponsored by Public Health, Owen Sound Volkswagen, Grey County OPP and Owen Sound Police Services.

 


"The Older Adult with Chronic Conditions - Who Needs Exercise?"

Date    June 12

Time    9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Place   Walkerton Pentecostal Church

Cost    $45.00 includes lunch

Registration info: This workshop is designed for older adults and those who work with them to provide an overview of chronic conditions and how they affect the ability to exercise, how exercises can be modified and why exercise is needed. This "Stay on Your Feet" initiative will be the first day of training for the Senior Fitness Instructor students and the speakers bureau.  Partners include the South Bruce Grey Health Services (Chesley and Walkerton), the Hanover and District Hospital and the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging.
