News Release For Immediate Release August 5, 2005
Mosquito Samples Return Negative Results
Lab tests on mosquito samples taken from Chesley, Owen Sound, and Oxenden in response to a Human case of West Nile Virus have found no trace of the potentially dangerous virus. West Nile Virus is amplified by the Culex spp. Mosquito commonly found in urban areas or where there is highly concentrated organic material. The mosquito picks up the disease by feeding on infected birds.
The Grey-Bruce Health Unit West Nile Virus Surveillance program has not found any WNV-positive mosquitoes or birds in 2005, but has found culex mosquitoes concentrated in the Chesley area. In response to the human case, however, the mosquito sampling program has been greatly expanded and mechanical control of sewage lagoons and catch basins continues in partnership with the Ministry of the Environment and the City of Owen Sound.
There have been four probable human cases in Ontario thus far this summer. The potential risks remain high; “Mosquitoes are reproducing rapidly due to the combination of rainfall and warm weather in recent weeks,” said Dr. Lynn. Individual awareness and protection continues to be a leading factor in the prevention of West Nile Virus. Prevent mosquito bites by avoiding mosquito-heavy areas at dusk, covering exposed skin with light-coloured clothing, checking doors and window screens for holes and cracks, and using mosquito repellents with DEET when outdoors. Report dead or ill birds to your local Public Health Unit, and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by getting rid of standing water in still ponds, bird baths, roof gutters, and tire swings.
