News Release For Immediate Release April 22, 2009
Turn Off The Screens and Win!
From April 27 – May 3 children and their families across Grey Bruce are challenged to participate in the seventh annual Turn Off The Screens week. This year the event will run a full seven days. During the week students do their best to get off the couch and get active by turning off the television, video game and computer (except for educational purposes). Participants are eligible to win some great prizes sponsored by Grey Bruce Partners in Health. In 2008, 80% of local schools participated and more than 2700 students returned their log sheets.
Local physical activity events take place throughout the week to help students, school staff and their families turn off their screens. Recreation Departments, Community Action Networks and School Community Councils across Grey Bruce have organized a number of activities including swimming, hiking, scavenger hunts and road hockey. Check out the Grey Bruce Health Unit website and click the Turn Off The Screens icon for a full list of activities.
Students who decrease their screen time and return their completed log sheet will be eligible to win prizes such as sporting goods equipment. The top three participating schools are also be eligible for prizes.
To decrease screen time parents are encouraged to try the following strategies:
Take this opportunity to get outside and “PLAY your way, every day!”
