CAW receives EatSmart! Award of Excellence
The menu in the cafeteria at the Canadian Auto Workers Family Education Centre in Port Elgin includes many healthy eating choices including low fat, low sodium and high fibre options. Presentation of the provincial EatSmart! Award of Excellence on Tuesday, August 10, acknowledges the Centre’s efforts towards healthy eating. The CAW Education Centre is the first workplace cafeteria in Grey Bruce to receive the award.
The award recognizes workplace cafeterias demonstrating excellence in the areas of nutrition, food safety and a smoke-free environment. Through the efforts of Executive Chef, Paul Johnston; CAW Executive Director, Dean Fowler; and the Centre’s Joint Health and Safety Committee, the workplace cafeteria offers lower fat, lower salt and higher fibre food choices along with the Chef Johnson’s personal commitment to use local foods whenever possible. The staff and visitors of the CAW Family Education Centre will enjoy the benefits of tasty and healthy food choices.
The goal of the Eat Smart! program is to contribute to the reduction of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer by helping consumers identify healthier choices when eating away from home. The program is also meant to help reduce the incidence of food-borne illness in Ontario.
