News Release For Immediate Release August 30, 2010 Latest Sample Results From Lake Rosalind and Marl Lake Show Caution Still Required
The Do Not Use Water Advisory issued on August 20, 2010 for the residents near and around Lake Rosalind and Marl Lake in the Municipality of Brockton still stands. This advisory affects those residents who use the lakes for domestic or recreational purposes due to the presence of blue green algae (cynobacteria) within the lakes. Water accessed by residents from their own separate private well supply is not affected. Samples taken on Monday August 23rd show that levels of toxin (Microcystin) in Lake Rosalind had risen from the previous week. The results from Marl Lake showed the presence of the toxin forming algae and of the toxin, but at levels below the drinking water limit. Due to the weather conditions experienced over the last week which may have lead to an increase in the algae bloom, the Health Unit is still recommending that residents follow the advisory. Microcystin toxins may be harmful to human health and to the health of animals. INSTRUCTIONS Do not drink, brush teeth with, bathe in, shower in or swim in the water. Do not wash clothes or wash dishes with the water. Do not let pets drink or bathe in the water. Do not boil the water – boiling water may release more toxins in the water. Do not eat fish caught in the lake (particularly liver, kidney and other organs). The Do Not Use Advisory will remain in effect until water samples taken by the Ministry of Environment indicate that the lake water is safe. The next set of sample results will not be received until after the Labour Day weekend. The Municipality of Brockton is working closely with Public Health and the Ministry of the Environment to remove the Do Not Use Advisory as soon as possible.
