News Release For Immediate Release September 8, 2010
International FASD Awareness Day
September 9th is a day to acknowledge those individuals who have been affected by alcohol use during pregnancy. It is also a day to remind us to support women to have alcohol-free pregnancies! This is International FASD Awareness Day. On the ninth day of the ninth month, organizations and agencies across Canada plan events to raise awareness of FASD. The ninth day of the ninth month represents the nine months of pregnancy; nine months when the safest choice is no alcohol! Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the term used for the harm that can occur to a fetus when a woman drinks alcohol during her pregnancy. Alcohol can cause both birth defects and brain damage to the unborn baby. On September 9th, two local events will be held to acknowledge FASD Awareness Day. At the Owen Sound Farmers Market, local musicians will showcase their talents. Everyone is invited to stop by for an opportunity to enjoy the entertainment and learn more about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. This event will run from 9 am to 2 pm and is hosted by the Owen Sound FASD Support Group and the Children’s Aid Society of Owen Sound and the County of Grey. FASD posters by local high school students will be on display at the event. In addition, from 9 am to 12:30 pm M’Wikwedong Native Cultural Resource Centre, 1723 8th Avenue East Owen Sound, will be hosting displays, speeches and activities. The morning will begin with a Ceremony. If you would like additional information on FASD or would like to learn more about local resources and supports for pregnant women please call Public Health at 519-376-9420 or visit our web site at www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca. -30-
