Influenza: Questions and Answers

What does the flu mean to you?

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a common respiratory illness that can leave you bedridden for five to 10 days. Headache, chills, cough, fever, loss of appetite and fatigue are just a few symptoms people experience when ill with the flu. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are uncommon in adults, although sometimes seen in young children

Do young, healthy people fall ill from the flu?

Every year, millions of Canadians fall ill from the flu. Most healthy individuals will recover after the flu, although they may spread the virus to others such as the elderly or those with medical conditions who may be at much greater risk. Serious complications from the flu include pneumonia, hospitalization and even death.

How is the flu virus spread?

The flu virus is very contagious. It spreads rapidly from person to person by air-borne droplets passed from coughing or sneezing. The virus can survive for up to 48 hours on many household surfaces such as telephones, doorknobs and countertops.

Why do I need an annual flu vaccine?

There are many strains of the influenza virus. The flu vaccine changes yearly based on predictions made by the World Health Organization as to the three most common strains to circulate in the northern hemisphere. To protect our community from the devastating effects of the flu, it is highly recommended that most Canadians over six months old receive the flu vaccine yearly.

When should I receive my annual flu vaccine?

It is recommended to receive the flu vaccine annually between October and December. It takes the body two weeks to achieve maximum protection from the flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the flu. Studies show that with a good match between the vaccine and flu strains illness will be prevented in 70% - 90% of healthy children and adults.
