Tattoo or Piercing - Be a Smart Consumer!
More and more people are donning some form of body art with tattoos and piercing. However, even today, getting a tattoo or a piercing is not risk-free. There are things to consider before getting that tattoo or piercing. Public Health wants you to be a smart consumer!
Blood-borne infections such as Hepatitis B, C or HIV; skin infections or scarring can result if the artist does not properly clean and sterilize equipment. Allergic reactions can occur from tattoo dyes or body jewelry. Some piercings require a long healing time, are you prepared to take proper care of your new piercing? Have you considered possible slurred speech or dental injury from an oral piercing? It is important to understand these risks and take precautions to protect yourself. Ultimately, it’s your body and your health.
Always use an artist in an inspected shop. Never allow friends to pierce or tattoo on you. A tattoo or pierce being offered at home or at a party is dangerous. There is a greater risk of infection if equipment is not properly cleaned and sterilized.
Visit the studio, ask questions and observe. Is the studio clean? Do they use disposable needles? Do they have an autoclave? If you don’t see an autoclave, ask about disposable equipment. Does the artist wash his/her hands? Do they use disposable gloves? Ask about procedures and healing times? A reputable, informed and safe artist won’t be offended or upset by your questions and will have all the answers and explanations ready for you.
Shop around and trust your instincts. Remember, a tattoo or a piercing is a service you are purchasing, however it’s not something you can return or exchange. Tattoos are considered permanent and can only expensive laser therapy can remove them. Visit different shops and ask the same questions. If you feel uncomfortable about anything in the shop go elsewhere.
If you’re still unsure, postpone getting a tattoo or piercing until you’ve done more research. We encourage you to call Public Health at 519-376-9420 or toll free at 1-800-263-3456, or visit our web site at www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca. We can help answer some of your questions. - 30 -
