COLD WEATHER & Health Hazards for Risk Groups
|
Going outside during
the wintertime may pose a health risk for certain groups. Being prepared and
well informed, will reduce the risk of Frostnip, Frostbite or Hypothermia.
Groups that are more at Risk during Cold Weather conditions
-
Children younger than 6 years of age
-
Elderly
- People
without permanent shelter or People in homes without power
When the temperature
drops and the wind speed goes up, the exposed skin will experience a
lower/colder temperature, this is the wind chill. For example, if the outside
temperature is -10ºC
and the wind chill is -20, it means that your face will feel as cold as it would
on a calm day when the temperature is -20ºC.
Exposed skin will
freeze in minutes at very cold wind chills. It is advised to dress warmly and to
limit your outdoor time accordingly.
