School Qualifies for Eat Smart! Cafeteria Award

On Thursday, May 20 at 1:00 p.m., Nutritionist Lynda Bumstead will present the “Eat Smart! School Cafeteria Award” to Bruce Peninsula District School, at a special school assembly.

To qualify for this Eat Smart! Award each cafeteria must meet the following criteria:

·        Offer a variety of healthy food choices

·        Establish a proven track record in safe food handling and sanitation

·        Employ at least one full-time kitchen employee certified in safe food handling

·        Offer 100% smoke- free seating in accordance with the local bylaws

“When I took a look at all the heart healthy food choices available, there was no doubt they would qualify,” states Lynda Bumstead, nutritionist for Public Health.  “Not only did they meet the guidelines for offering nutritional food but these foods were offered at a reasonable cost.”

“We try to be creative with our menu to encourage students to try new foods,” states Antoinette, the cafeteria manager.  “It is definitely working.  Cafeteria sales have increased greatly over the past few years.”

To encourage healthy eating, the cafeteria serves no french fries.  Instead it offers nutritious meals including a side salad and low fat desserts.  Fresh fruit, vegetables and milk are also available.  The cafeteria offers no penny candy.

Partners of the Eat Smart! Program include the Public Health Unit, Grey Bruce Partners in Health, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, and the Canadian Cancer Society.
