The Living Hope Centre in Maple Square
Mall, Saugeen Shores, received a gift - a gift that will keep on giving
throughout the year. Grey Bruce Partners in Health generously provided
financial assistance to acquire a new kitchen range. Living Hope provides a
weekly Monday night spaghetti dinner to over 100 people for the price of a
donation.
Seniors’ Winter Safety in Public Places Campaign

One in three seniors in Ontario will fall
and hurt themselves this winter. To help prevent falls in public places, the
City of Owen Sound and the Public Health Unit have launched a seniors’ winter
safety campaign.

Public Health Urges Poultry Workers to Get Flu Shot
Release Date: November 25, 2004
Those in close contact with live poultry should get the flu vaccination; it
could reduce the likelihood of a worker being infected with both human and
avian flu at the same time. If this happened, the two viruses could possibly
"mix" and create a new virus to which people are not immune.
Hospital staff flu vaccination rate below target
Release Date: November 10, 2004
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care envisions that 100% of health care
workers that are in contact with high-risk individuals receive annual
influenza vaccinations. We need a
minimum of 70% to be immunized in order to achieve
“group immunity” and prevent large outbreaks of disease. Only 1 of 12 hospital
sites had over 70% of staff immunized against the flu.
“Speaker’s Corner” Coming to Local High Schools

New Website Launched to Help with Car Seats

Public Health Nurses have developed a new
section of the Public Health Unit’s website that focuses on the details of car
seat safety. Printable checklists are available on the site for topics such as
buying a car seat, using a used car seat, harnessing a child in the seat, and
installing the seat in the vehicle. The website also includes a “car seat
safety calculator” where a child’s age and weight can be entered into the
computer and results appear to show parents and caregivers the type of car
seat best suited to the child.

Up to 1500 Seniors Die from Flu-Related Illness Every Year

This fall, the Ontario Ministry of Health
and Long-Term Care will be providing free flu vaccine to Ontario residents
over the age of 6 months. Public Health Unit flu clinics begin October 25th.
88% of Tobacco Retailers Pass Compliance Monitoring
Release Date: October 18, 2004
Ontario’s Tobacco Control Act makes it an
offence for anyone to sell or give cigarettes to an individual who is less
than 19 years of age. Tobacco Control Act Enforcement Officers with the Public
Health Unit recently completed the Ministry of Health’s mandatory compliance
monitoring of tobacco retailers for 2004.
Public Health Staff Plans for an Influenza Pandemic

Media representatives are invited to
attend an Influenza Pandemic preparedness session on October 22. Medical
Officer of Health Hazel Lynn, along with other key Public Heath planners, will
update Public Health Unit employees about their roles and responsibilities in
response to the potential worldwide spread of a devastating disease.

What Every Parent Needs To Know About Avoiding Alcohol Liability

Professor Robert Solomon from the
University of Western Ontario, an expert in the area of alcohol liability and
senior policy advisor from MADD Canada, will be coming to the Walkerton
Community Centre to discuss this issues of out-of-control teen parties and
alcohol-related liability.
Only half of local mothers breastfeeding their babies at 6 months, study
reports.

The Public Health Unit released new data
today that shows mothers in Grey-Bruce want to breastfeed. According to
Public Health Nurse, Dana Aitken-Howes, "There were two major reasons mothers
stated as to why they stopped breastfeeding their infant."

Health Unit reports that a crow, submitted for testing last week, tested
positive for West Nile virus. The bird was found in the Sauble Beach area.

School Suspension Notices on the Rise in Grey-Bruce

notice for not having up-to-date immunization records during the 2003-2004
school year. Many parents responded to the notices and avoided suspension for

Beach water sampling revealed that
Markdale Pond had two consecutive samples that exceeded Ministry of Health and
Long-Term Care standards for acceptable bacterial levels.
Durham Conservation Beaches Posted as Unsafe for Bathing

Beach water sampling revealed that both
Durham Conservation Middle Dam and Durham Conservation East Dam (McGowan) had
samples that exceeded Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards for

To protect the people of Ontario against rabies, the
province has started its annual wildlife rabies control operations for 2004.
The Ministry of Natural Resources will drop aerial vaccine baits from August
16 to August 18 in the Grey-Bruce area.

Poplar Beach Safe for Bathing

Huron-Kinloss - Beach water sampling at
Poplar Beach revealed two consecutive samples indicating that the water is now
safe for bathing.
Poplar Beach (Municipality of Huron-Kinloss) Posted as Unsafe for Bathing
Release Date: July 28, 2004
High levels of bacteria in the water at
Poplar Beach may pose a risk to the health of swimmers. As a result, this area
will be posted, and remain posted, until two consecutive samples indicate that
the water is safe for bathing.
Sauble Beach May Become a Blue Flag Beach
Release Date: July 16, 2004
Sauble Beach is being considered as a
recipient of the Internationally renowned Blue Flag designation, an eco-label
awarded to beaches and marinas. On Monday, July 19, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at the
South Bruce Peninsula Municipal Building in Wiarton, Sarah Winterton;
Programme Director, Environmental Defence Canada, and Lou D'Alessandro;
Manager of Health Protection, Grey Bruce Health Unit, will be answering
questions and discussing the designation.
Boil Water Advisory Lifted for Lincoln Park

Officer of Health Dr. Hazel Lynn has lifted the boil water advisory for the
Lincoln Park water system as of Friday, July 16, 2004. The results of two
consecutive audit samples by the Public Health Unit showed that the water is
safe for drinking.

Boosting Child Safety -- Booster Seat Winner Chosen
Release Date: June 21, 2004
OWEN SOUND - An infant/child car seat
safety clinic was held at Brick Brothers Owen Sound Volkswagen on June 12th.
At each clinic, the host gives away a booster seat in a free draw for
participants. This year’s winner is 3-year-old Kirsten Ross. Forty-seven car
seats were checked, with 89% of them found to have errors in installation.
Protect Yourself from Swimmer’s Itch

The Public Health Unit reminds swimmers
to protect themselves from Swimmer’s Itch, a temporary skin infection that is
acquired by lake bathers when they accidentally become involved in the life
cycle of the trematode worm. Swimmer’s Itch appears during warm weather in
early June and peaks in July.

Ruling on Smoke-Free Bylaw Disappointing

Rodney delivered her judgement today regarding Summit Place’s legal challenge
to Grey County’s smoke-free bylaw. In her ruling, Justice Rodney supported
Summit Place’s challenge, ruling that Summit Place is a “private residence”
and therefore clients are permitted to smoke in a designated smoking room.

Not Enough Kids Using Booster Seats

protection. I’m pleased to report that Grey County’s bylaw is recognized as a

A Boil Water Advisory is issued for the
town of Lion’s Head for Monday, May 24, 2004 at 9:00 p.m. The reason for
issuing the Boil Water Advisory is that the Ontario Clean Water Agency will
perform planned maintenance on the drinking water system.

Food Safety Course in Southampton

We have recently seen serious food
contaminations leading to illnesses in Grey-Bruce that could have been
avoided. Food safety knowledge in the industry is essential to protect the
health of customers and the reputation of the establishments. It is likely
that the Ministry of Health and Long Term-Care will soon require that at least
one certified food handler be at a food premise at all times. For these
reasons, the Public Health Unit is offering a Food Safety Certification Course
in Southampton.

study sponsored by WHO, alcohol was listed as the third most detrimental risk
factor for chronic disease in developed countries, with only tobacco and high
blood pressure causing more harm (WHO, 2003).

Boron Levels Slightly Elevated in Drinking Water

boron level in some well water in the former Sydenham Township has been found

Public Health Office Closing - Southampton
Business Will Continue as Usual

The Board of Health is relocating the staff of the Public Health
office in Southampton to its head office in Owen Sound. As of April 8, 2004,

communities will continue to be delivered, without interruption.

World TB Day

World TB Day, held on March 24 each year,
is an occasion for people around the world to raise awareness about the
international health threat presented by tuberculosis (TB). Tuberculosis is
still here in Grey & Bruce. In 2003, there were three active TB cases that
required treatment and close follow-up. There were over 30 investigations for
tuberculosis in our local area.
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer
(cancer of the colon or rectum) is the second leading cause of cancer death
overall in men and women. It surpasses both breast and prostate cancer in
mortality and is second only to lung cancer in the number of cancer deaths.
Chlamydia Rates Up 127%

Chlamydia rates in Grey and Bruce have
reached an all-time high. The number of cases has increased 127% since 2001.
The rise in chlamydia cases has been steady with a startling jump last year.
