News Release For Immediate Release June 14, 2007
Survey of Lead in Owen Sound Drinking Water Completed
The Grey Bruce Health Unit received results of water sample testing for lead concentration in the drinking water of a selected survey of Owen Sound homes. Owen Sound Public Works identified these homes as having lead service connections. There are approximately 160 homes in Owen Sound with lead service connections.
The Health Unit collected two samples, one standing and one flushed, from 20% of these homes. The results show four of the flushed samples and six of the standing samples were found to have lead concentrations above the provincial drinking water standard. The Ontario Drinking Water Standard for lead has a safety factor that is set at 10 times below the level associated with any health risks. These occupants were provided at the time of sampling with information of health facts related to lead.
Lead levels in blood samples of Ontarians have fallen dramatically during the past three decades, due to the phasing out of lead in paint, gasoline and water pipes. Water is a minor contributor to lead levels in blood. Lead is present in the drinking water in most North American cities due to the use of lead pipe in some older homes built before 1952 and the use of lead-containing soldering joints until the late 1980’s.
The sample results were reviewed and discussed with the Ministry of Environment and The City of Owen Sound. The following plan of action has been initiated:
