Take a Closer Look at Public Health Nursing!

National Nursing Week May 7 – 13

National Nursing Week, May 7 – 13, is an opportunity to celebrate the commitment of Public Health Nurses (PHNs) and their contribution to the health of individuals, families, groups and communities. These university-trained registered nurses bring knowledge, skill and dedication to support and mobilize others to achieve and maintain health. PHNs understand that health relates directly to key determinants such as housing, income, employment, education and safety. PHNs collaborate with partners and work with communities to change environments in support of better health.

This team of progressive community leaders draws upon their knowledge of community development and health promotion strategies to teach, counsel and advocate for healthier living. Using an evidence-based approach and current research, PHNs assess the health needs of their clients and communities. They plan, provide and evaluate the impact of diverse programs, in an ever-expanding practice that emphasize parent and child health, healthier lifestyles and communicable disease control.

“Stepping Out on the Bruce Trail” -- launched in January by Public Health Nurses with the support of key community and municipal partners – successfully promotes year-round physical activity. Family Health programs include home visiting by PHNs, support new parents and young families to ensure the best start in life for children. Other roles include the investigation and control of the spread of infectious diseases. PHNs are actively involved in research projects like I-START, a study that looks at the control of blood pressure and the impact on heart health. Other nurses advocate for anti-smoking policies and educate youth about the dangers of tobacco use and other drugs.

“There is tremendous opportunity as a PHN to influence the health of our population in Grey and Bruce,” says Public Health Nurse, LeAnn White, “I truly believe in the principles of public health. Every day is rewarding, working in my own community and making a visible difference in people’s health.”

Through a wide-ranging network of community partnerships, health professionals such as LeAnn work towards a long-term investment in health. Nursing Week reminds us that Public Health Nurses, with their unique scope of practice and a focus on health and wellness rather than illness, are a crucial part of our health care system.
