News Release For Immediate Release April 22, 2009 Grey Bruce Health Unit Achieves LEED Gold
The Grey Bruce Health Unit staff celebrates Earth Day with confirmation from the Canada Green Building Council that our new state of the art building has achieved the Gold Standard in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
This project was evaluated according to LEED Canada for new construction. The building achieved 39 points, fulfilling requirements for the Gold Standard. This is the only Public Health facility of its kind in Ontario to achieve the LEED designation. The LEED certification examines five environmental categories including: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources and Indoor Environmental Quality as well as a category of Innovation and Design Process. (See Backgrounder)
“The LEED certification confirms our vision of a signature building that respects the site and the environment through ‘green’ design.” says Dr. Hazel Lynn, Medical Officer of Health. “The building speaks to the importance of the built environment in the over-all health of our community.” -30-
