News Release For Immediate Release March 1, 2010
The Great Big Crunch
On Thursday, March 11, 2010, over 8000 students in 28 schools across Grey Bruce will take part in The Great Big Crunch. Everyone will crunch an apple together to make the biggest crunch. Now in its third year, The Great Big Crunch is part of a cross-Canada, record-setting event promoting the healthy crunch of apples! Local students will be joining thousands of students from coast to coast.
In 2009, 28,863 students, teachers, staff and parents participated in 125 schools with a cross-Canada synchronized apple crunch. The Great Big Crunch invites students and teachers to learn about healthy eating and local and global food systems while following the journey from the apple seed, to the harvest, to the market, to the core.
Grey Bruce Eat and Learn is sponsoring this event and will pay for many of the apples. Local growers and stores have donated or reduced the cost for the rest. The event kicks off Nutrition Month and promotes healthy snacking.
Grey Bruce Eat and Learn offers healthy food choices to more than 8500 children each day in over 70 schools across Grey Bruce, providing good nutritious breakfast, lunch and snacks. It costs about 85 cents a day to serve breakfast to a child at a school program!
