Help For Parents

As parents, you have an important role to play in educating your children about alcohol and other drugs.  Talk to your children and listen to your children.

The following articles were published as a series in local newspapers.  A Public Health Nurse, in partnership with police and a local addiction treatment agency, wrote the articles.  The information in them provides parents with some valuable tools that can be used when preparing to talk to their children &/or teens about substance use & partying.

Not My Kid: Crystal Meth in Your Community is a 12-part series by Lori Gillespie, Managing Editor of The Post in Hanover. Examining the effects of crystal meth in local communities, the series was initiated in response to a local parent who asked The Post to help educate the community about the dangers of the drug.

Parents Who Host Lose The Most:

What Every Parent Should Know About Hosting Teen Underage Drinking Parties

What parents should know:

  • As a parent, you cannot give alcohol to your teen’s
friends under the age of 19 under any
circumstance, even in your own home, even with
    their parent’s permission.

  • You may be assuming legal liability allowing a
person under 19, other than your own child, to
remain in your home or on your property while
    consuming or possessing alcohol.

If you break the law:

  • You can face a maximum sentence of 1 year in jail
and up to a $200,000 fine.

  • Others can sue you if you give alcohol to anyone of
any age and they, in turn, hurt someone, hurt
    themselves or damage property.

  • Officers can take any alcohol, money or property
    used in committing the offence.

Things you can do as a parent:

  • Refuse to supply alcohol to children.

  • Be at home when your teen has a party.

  • Make sure that alcohol is not brought into your
home or property by your teen’s friends.

  • Talk to other parents about not providing alcohol
at other events your child will be attending.

  • Create alcohol-free opportunities and activities in
your home so teens will feel welcome.

  • Going out of town? Out for the night? The
"Ultimate Party Pact/Police Authorization to Enter
Dwelling Form" is a good precaution.
