Resources for Educators

 

  • Public Health is committed to assisting educators to incorporate healthy eating and active living into the classroom setting, as well as role modeling healthy habits for the students to last a lifetime.

 

Curriculum –based programs

  • The Ontario Physical and Health Education Association has an excellent resource for the school setting at www.menuofchoices.ca . This online resource is designed to support your entire school community in addressing healthy eating and active living. You will find curriculum-based lessons, school nutrition checklists, interactive tools and templates, and printer-friendly pages.

  • Dietitians of Canada also supports nutrition education for  elementary grades one to six through their Mission Nutrition project found at www.dietitians.ca

  • Peel Region’s Discover Healthy Eating is a teacher’s resource for grades one through eight at www.region.peel.ca/health/eating

 

Resources to Borrow from Grey Bruce Public Health

  • Portion Kits: 12 food models and a  backgrounder document
  • Supersize Me DVD  -recommended for grades 6 and up
  • Supersize Me Discussion Guide to be used if the DVD is shown in the classroom
  • The Fat Vest:  a 20 pound vinyl replica simulating 20 pounds of abdominal fat  * heavy object warning *
  • The Healthy Kitchen– a 3-panel display with question and answer doors about Canada’s Food Guide  * some assembly required
  • Call Public Health to book these resources or to inquire about our newest resource: Nutrition Tools for Schools from the CHSNE (Creating a Healthy School Nutrition Environment) working group.
