Cleaning Needles and Syringes (and other sharp objects)

If you need to dispose of:

  • needles
  • syringes
  • lances
  • other used sharp objects,

you need a SHARPS CONTAINER. This prevents anyone from being pricked by a used needle.

Sharps containers can be purchased at your pharmacy. The reasonable cost usually includes disposal service once the container is returned to the pharmacy.

You may choose to make your own container. Here’s what you’ll need to have:

  • metal (e.g., coffee can) or hard plastic
  • difficult to puncture
  • has a lid that seals tightly or can be securely taped
  • does not leak
  • is labelled "hazardous material"

Remember to always keep all sharps containers out of children's reach!

When the container is full:

  • Pour a bleach solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water over the sharps; let stand 10 minutes.
  • Drain carefully.
  • Secure lid or cap.
  • Under current local legislation and bylaws, home sharps containers can be placed for disposal with regular household garbage; check with your local hospital or pharmacy to see if they have a service available for you.
