Current Sexual Health Videos – Descriptions

 

1.     Abstinence 2000– Today’s teens are almost constantly exposed to the topic of sex, whether it be among their peers or through the various media outlets – television, radio, and movies – from which they derive their entertainment.  The exposure to sexual topics seems to send the message that sex and participating in sexual activity is acceptable.  This video helps viewers realize that abstinence is the right choice, and provides them the tools that they need to say no to sex.  It also makes students aware of the potential consequences of sexual activities – STDs and pregnancy.

 

2.     AIDS:  What Everyone Needs to Know  1999 – Interviews, animation and live-action illustrate: facts and misconceptions about HIV and its transmission, the progression from HIV to AIDS, the latest advances in diagnosis and management, living with HIV and the important role of supportive family and friends, a focus on women and HIV, a demonstration of correct condom use for safer sex and changing perceptions of HIV positive people and their quality of life.  The program stresses the importance of avoiding infection and notes that only abstinence is 100 % effective in insuring against infection.

 

3.     Always Changing: Puberty and Stuff About You (2004)

 

4.     Changes 1989 (from the Growing Up Series) – explores the physical and emotional changes assocated with puberty.  Barbara, Blu and the students discuss everything from menstruation, erections, masturbation and nocturnal emissions to acne, perspiration and pubic hair.  The emotional side of puberty is not neglected, as the focus shifts to the ups, downs and insecurities experienced by preteens during this special time.  Imaginative animated sequences illustrate in full detail the amazing physical changes the body undergoes.  Myths are dispelled and youngsters are encouraged to feel pride in themselves and their emerging sexuality.

 

5.     Chlamydia 1988– provides a complete overview of the disease, including the methods of contact, the most common symptoms and the most effective treatment.  Chlamydia also stresses the importance of communicating openly with your partner and your doctor, and developing responsible sexual attitudes.  Chlamydia afflicts thousands of otherwise healthy people who could have avoided becoming victims had they known more about the disease and how to prevent it. This video is an important step in that education process.

7.     Especially You 1989 (from Growing Up Series)– As adolescence approaches, many children struggle to find a balance between being an individual and being part of a group.  ESPECIALLY YOU is designed to help youngsters acquire the skills they will need to cope with peer pressure.  The film focuses on the importance of liking oneself, of developing strong decision-making/problem-solving abilities and of respecting differences in others.  Animated vignettes reflecting universal peer pressure situations and live-action role playing sequences, acted out by Barbara and Blu, are reinforced by spirited exchanges with the class.

11.                        It’s a Change Thing: 2001: - presented  by Kotex.  3 parts: 1) girls, 2)both 3) boys.  Topics include body changes and issues, puberty, development, zits,  body odour, etc.

 

12.                        OUT: Stories of Lesbian and Gay Youth, classroom version  1994– OUT is an intimate exploration of he struggles and victories of gay and lesbian youth in Canada.  Delving into the emotional, societal and familial conflicts lesbian and gay youth often face, this film breaks the damaging silence surrounding sexual orientation and sexual differences.  Through candid interviews with gay and lesbian youth from varied cultural and racial heritages, issues of discrimination as well as the compounding problems of confronting racism and sexism are sensitively addressed.  OUT provides awareness, understanding and hope to gay and lesbian youth, parents, counselors and educators.

 

13.                        Point of Death 1999 – Sharing dirty needles is a major contributor to the spread of HIV/AIDS.  This video is a graphic demonstration of this process.  Written and acted by students, it shows how this can happen even in a small town.

 

14.                        Queer Voices – an educational video on homophobia 2001: - A series of written messages explaining homophobia and its effects on society.

 

15.                        Risky Stuff - interviews with teens about perceptions and common questions regarding STI’s.  Statistic and facts are discussed about all types of STIs.  Common myths and misconceptions are discussed.

 

16.                        Sexually Transmitted Diseases 2002: - Signs and symptoms of all STIs, how they are transmitted and how to protect yourself.

 

17.                        Sex Spelled Out for Parents 1999: When your kids ask questions about sex, what will you say?  This 4 part series, for parents of children ages 3 to 14, will help you talk with them.  Sexual health educator Meg Hickling, R.N., suggests ways to approach different age groups, and what information is appropriate for each.  She tackles tough questions with humour, tact and expertise that have made her an acclaimed and award-winning sexual health educator.  Meg Hickling is the author of Speaking of Sex: Are you Ready to Answer the Questions Your Kids Will Ask?

 

a.     Volume One – An Overview: Meg explains why it’s important to talk with young children about sex.  She outlines the 3 age groups that will be discussed in the following programs:  Preschoolers, ages 3 to 5; Primaries, ages 5 to 8; and Intermediates, ages 8 to 14.  Comments from parents and children help to show kids’ thoughts and questions about sex. 

 

b.     Volume Two – Early Childhood or Preschoolers: This age group, approximately ages 3 to 5, can invent stories about how babies are made, if they don’t get correct information.  Meg Hickling suggests ways of dealing with some embarrassing situations.  Comments from parents and children help to show kids’ thoughts and questions about sex. 

 

c.      Volume Three - Primaries: Many children in this age group love jokes about poo and underwear.  Meg Hickling tells how they can become confused if we tell them the baby grows in the stomach.  Comments from parents and children help to show kids’ thoughts and questions about sex. 

 

d.     Volume Four – Intermediates:  Lots of children in this age group feel that sex is gross and “You are gross and disgusting to want to talk about it!”.  Yet parents need to talk to them about puberty changes, and they need to be able to answer the questions that can come up.  Comments from parents and children help to show kids’ thoughts and questions about sex.
