How to Ensure a Smoke-Free Workplace

Ensure proper signage is visible inside and outside where applicable at the workplace.

Prepare employees for responding to customers and employees who are smoking at or near the workplace.  For example: “I’m sorry, but the by-law and the Smoke-Free Ontario Act prohibits smoking inside this building. Would you please put out the cigarette or go outside with it?” Be sure to redirect individuals where to go who wish to smoke.

Develop or update your internal policy to be consistent with local by-laws and the Smoke-Free Ontario Act (See Workplace Smoke-Free Policies).

Make sure your smoke-free workplace policy has been distributed and/or posted for all employees to see.

Enforcement of a smoke-free workplace policy is important and should be consistent with policies on how to handle alcohol and drug use.

Enforcement may involve progressive disciplinary measures in combination with support and counselling.
