WNV & Infected Meat

Can livestock and wild game become infected with West Nile Virus?

Yes. Just like humans, birds and other animals, livestock and wild game can carry the virus.

Can I contract West Nile Virus from eating infected meat?

There is no evidence that WNV is transmitted in this manner. However, any risk of developing WNV from eating infected meat can be eliminated by ensuring meat is properly handled and cooked before consumption. Proper handling and cooking of meat is also important for preventing other serious food-borne illnesses.
