How To Start Your Walking Club
q Talk it up- get employees interested and advertise using voice mail, email, and posters around the workplace
q Ask when employees prefer to walk
q Download this handout and give one to each employee
q Public Health also promotes the “Walk This Way!” kit. A self help calendar that helps individuals plan and record their walking activity. Call our office for this resource to help your colleagues. Office contact numbers
q Promote a noon hour walking club for 20 minutes or try to encourage two 10 minute walks at scheduled break times. Set up a meeting location and head out!
q Make your club fun, easy and accessible- start gradually-it need not be complicated!
q Offer incentives such as prizes or certificates of recognition.
q Hold a contest or challenge between departments and work units on the number of walks, or distance travelled . You could even expand to daily number of steps using a pedometer.
q Hang a map or a chart for employees to write down their progress and provide a visual for your challenge! (Optional)
q Supply of umbrellas or rain ponchos for wet weather.
q Ask friends and co-workers to join you for some fresh air!
Where?
q Design a two 10 minute outdoor walking routes, and/or two 20 minute routes
q Consider an indoor route for rainy/snowy weather
