Breastfeeding and Your Diet
It is recommended that when you are breastfeeding that you continue to follow Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating. You can enjoy a wide variety of foods, while providing adequate nutrition for your breastfed baby. Health Canada recommends that breastfeeding mothers consume additional 450 calories per day – This is the equivalent to consuming a sandwich or two small snacks (like an apple or small muffin).
While there are many myths about certain foods and breastfeeding, there is no need to avoid any foods. If you notice that a particular food affects your baby, avoid the food and talk to your health care provider.
It is important while you are breastfeeding that you drink to quench your thirst.
Be aware that foods and drinks that contain caffeine may cause your baby to be fussy and wakeful. It is recommended that only 300mg of caffeine be consumed daily. This is the equivalent to two 8 ounce cups of coffee. Avoid the consumption of alcohol, as it can be harmful to your baby.
