Tattoos and Piercing: Are you safe?

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph (WDG) Public Health is
asking anyone who received a tattoo at a private residence on Harris Street in
Guelph by Shannyn Moss or Chris Haines to contact WDG Health Unit. The
home-based tattoo shop has never been inspected and it is possible the
equipment used for tattooing was not sterile.
Wash and cook fiddleheads to prevent illness

Grey Bruce residents are being reminded to thoroughly
wash and cook fiddleheads before they are consumed to avoid illness. Fiddleheads
are curled, edible shoots of the ostrich fern.

Tobacco vendor compliance with youth access legislation

Tobacco Enforcement Officers
and youth working at the Grey Bruce Health Unit have visited over half of the
tobacco retail vendors in Grey Bruce to verify youth access under the
Smoke-Free Ontario Act. Youth enter retail stores, such as convenience
stores and grocery stores, and attempt to purchase a tobacco product.
Pause to PLAY by Turning Off The Screens

It’s time once again for children and their families to
participate in the Turn Off The Screens challenge. This year’s 10th
annual event runs a full seven days from April 23 – April 29. During the week
students do their best to get off the couch and get active by turning off the
television, video game and computer.

FOOD RECALL- Health hazard alert: certain ground beef products may
contain E. coli O157:H7

The list of
affected products has been updated to provide details of over 135 affected
products under various brand names and codes that may be contaminated with
E. coli O157:H7. In addition to their brand names and codes, the affected products are
identifiable by the Establishment Number that appears on the packages, cartons
or cases. The products made at this facility bear Establishment Number (EST)
761.
Stop TB in My Lifetime

“Stop TB in my lifetime” is the child-centered theme this year for World
TB Day, March 24. At least 200,000 children die of tuberculosis (TB)
each year. In 2009, more than 10 million children were orphaned because
a parent died of TB.

Report shows risks of unpasteurized milk
Release Date: February 27, 2012
The rate of outbreaks caused by unpasteurized milk was 150 times greater than
outbreaks from pasteurized milk, according to a study by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. The 13-year review showed that the U. S. states where
the sale of unpasteurized milk (also called raw milk) was legal had more than
twice the rate of outbreaks as states where it was illegal.
Never too late to quit, but chance to win expires Wednesday

Driven to Quit Challenge registration closes at end of month
There is still time to join the more than 300 people in Grey Bruce who
have entered the Driven to Quit Challenge. While it is never too late to
quit smoking, it is down to the wire for Grey Bruce residents to trade
in the addiction for the chance to win a prize. The deadline to register
for The Driven to Quit Challenge is Wednesday, February 29, 2012.
Health Professionals Can Help Smokers Butt Out for Good

Tobacco use continues to be the number one preventable cause of
premature death, disease and disability. Of those 12 years and older in
Grey Bruce, 17.9 percent continue to smoke; almost one in five people.
Research shows that health professionals who speak to their clients
about their tobacco use can have a significant impact and can influence
smokers to consider quitting.

Influenza Arrives in Grey Bruce

On Tuesday, January 17, the Grey Bruce Health Unit received laboratory
results confirming Influenza B in a local Owen Sound resident. Area
health care practitioners are being notified and will be performing
appropriate testing on individuals experiencing influenza symptoms.

January 16, 2012 a woman was bitten by a dog that was off leash in
Durham Park. The dog is described as a black and brown German Shepherd.
National Non-Smoking Week acknowledges “Breaking up is hard to do”

Non-Smoking Week in Canada. The 2012 theme is “Breaking up is hard to do.” While
kicking a tobacco addiction is not easy, Grey Bruce residents can gain some
extra motivation with the seventh annual Driven to Quit Challenge, which
is open until February 29.
Photovoice exhibit highlights health issues important to local youth

The Owen Sound Artists' Co-op's Legacy Project proudly
presents Photovoice, a show featuring 21 photos with accompanying
narratives taken and composed by local youth from Saugeen First Nation
and the Chippewas of Nawash.
Healthcare workers in Grey Bruce are getting their flu shot

The Grey Bruce Health Unit is seeing an increase in the
number of healthcare workers receiving annual influenza immunization.
Each year, the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care requires vaccine
uptake rates as of November 15, before flu season begins and outbreaks
occur.
Shortest Day of Play
Release Date: January 4, 2012
More than 9,000 PLAY hours were officially logged during
the Shortest Day of PLAY event, December 21. Eleven municipalities
actively participated in the inaugural challenge encouraging Grey Bruce
residents to get more active. The top three municipalities accumulating
the highest number of PLAY hours were West Grey with 3,916 hours, Arran-Elderslie
with 1,429 hours and South Bruce with 1,191 hours. The top three
finishers receive unique trophies to display in their municipality.
