Grey Bruce Celebrates Launch of Smoke-Free Ontario Act!
On May 31, 2006, Ontario goes Smoke-Free. Under the new Smoke Free Ontario Act (SFOA) the province is introducing regulations aimed at ensuring public places are smoke-free. In conjunction with the provincial launch, the Grey Bruce Health Unit will hold a media conference to release new local data on exposure to second-hand smoke, detail the impact of the new legislation locally, the protection it provides against second-hand smoke and provide details on new funding. The event takes place at the Owen Sound Family Y, 640 2nd Avenue East, Owen Sound, Wednesday May 31, 2006.
11:10 – 11:30 Parade The Youth Action Alliance, lead by a piper; will leave Nortowne Plaza at 11:10 and parade through downtown Owen Sound ending at the Family Y. The young people will “chalk” a celebratory message in the sidewalk.
11:30: Media Briefing & Panel Presentation (30 min) 1) Presentation from MOH Dr. Hazel Lynn on the health effects of second hand smoke.
2) Epidemiologist Alanna Leffley will present a report from the 2005 survey of second-hand smoke in Grey Bruce.
3) Tobacco enforcement officer Laurie Moore will review highlights of the SFOA that comes into effect that day.
4) Peer Leaders will talk about the Youth Action Alliance work on prevention of smoking.
5) Public Health Nurse Ruth Ball will announce the Stop Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (STOP) study providing free Nicotine Replacement Therapy through the Health Unit to smokers who want to quit.
12:00: We will present "Smoke Free Champion" pins to community members who have fought for legislation locally.
12:15: Questions/ Photo Opportunities and light lunch served.
