News Release For Immediate Release April 2, 2007
“2 for 2” Campaign for Oral Health Month “2 for 2 is what you do!” is the message in the April Oral Health Month campaign from the Grey Bruce Health Unit Dental Team. Brushing twice a day for two minutes each time is an effective way to protect from tooth decay and gum disease.
Throughout April all grade two public and separate schools students will learn the 2 for 2 lesson with instruction on brushing and oral hygiene. Students receive a 2 for 2 package with a toothbrush, toothbrush timer, decal and activity sheet. The campaign is supported by the Huron Grey Bruce Dental Hygienists' Society.
Registered Dental Hygienists from Public Health annually screen approximately 10,000 students in kindergarten, grades 2, 4, 6, and 8 in the public, private and separate schools in Grey Bruce. The screening provides information on the level of tooth decay in the region. The screening is an assessment of the students’ mouths and does not replace regular check-ups by a dentist. The hygienist refers students in need of dental treatment, topical fluoride, dental sealant and oral hygiene instruction.
Promoting tooth brushing to children has benefit beyond improving oral health. Children who practice self-care activities, like tooth brushing, are more likely to adopt other healthy lifestyle behaviors as adults. Adults play an important role in making dental care part of their child’s routine. Children often model parent’s behavior so parents can set a positive example with regular brushing and flossing routines and through encouraging good eating and healthy snacking habits for their families.
