News Release For Immediate Release September 5, 2008
Healthy Start – Step One Early Prenatal Program
There are many things to think about and often many questions when a couple decides that they would like to have a baby. To provide timely information to families, the Grey Bruce Health Unit is launching Healthy Start – Step One a preconception / early prenatal program. This series of two evening sessions, held in both Owen Sound and Walkerton, is for those planning a pregnancy or are less than 18 weeks pregnant. Sessions include discussion of fetal development, physical changes, potential hazards, lifestyle issues and healthy relationships. There will be information about nutrition, emotional changes, fatherhood and the benefits of breastfeeding.
This program is in addition to the regular prenatal teaching that often happens later in pregnancy. Early information provides parents greater opportunity to affect the health of their baby and to make informed choices. Some information, such as the use of folic acid, is most valuable before pregnancy occurs. Any couple interested in planning a pregnancy in the near future would benefit from these sessions and is encouraged to register. For more information or to register, call Public Health at 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456.
