Medical Officer of Health to Visit Students for Launch of Dental Campaign

 

Currently, fewer than 50% of eleven-year-old Canadian children brush their teeth for the time and frequency advised by dental experts, even though brushing for two minutes, twice a day, is an effective way to protect against tooth decay and gum disease.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit, in partnership with the Ontario Association of Public Health Dentistry, is launching an exciting new dental health campaign to mark Dental Health Month in April, with a clear message:  “2 for 2 is what you do.”

As part of the activities for this campaign, Public Health dental staff will be making visits to Grade 2 classes in local schools to deliver an interactive lesson featuring the “2 for 2” message.  Dental staff will also distribute promotional items such as toothbrushes, bookmarks, decals and timers to students to encourage healthy dental habits at home.

To mark the launch of this campaign in the Grey-Bruce area, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Hazel Lynn will be making a special visit to the Grade 2 students at Alexandra Community Elementary School in Owen Sound on Wednesday, April 2^nd at 1:00 pm.   Dr. Lynn and Dental Hygienist Kathy Sled will bring the “2 for 2” message to the students and hand out promotional items, while sporting the colourful campaign T-shirts.  They will also be available for photo opportunities and comments after the lesson.

Dental staff will also be visiting other Grey Bruce schools delivering the “2 for 2” message during the week of April 2 to 11, 2003.   Media are welcome to visit the various schools during scheduled times.
