Free Youth Drug Information Kit
The Public Health Unit and Focus Project will celebrate Drug Awareness Week, November 15 to19, by offering a free parent information kit on alcohol & other drugs. This kit was created in response to specific information needs of Grey-Bruce parents. It is a parent’s guide to help young people who may face challenging situations and tough decisions about alcohol and other drug use. To obtain your free copy call Public Health at 881-1920 376-9420.
“When it comes to drugs, it’s important to talk and listen to your kids, set firm limits and provide them with a safe environment. Adult guidance for youth is essential where alcohol and other drugs are concerned,” says Public Health Nurse Linda Yenssen. “Still, how often do you feel that when you talk to your kids it goes in one ear and out the other? Don’t worry. When you talk about the important stuff, like the dangers of drinking, more of it sinks in than you might realize! This is what children in Grey-Bruce have told us. You are their number one role models.”
The kit offers tools for parents to use when talking to their child about alcohol and drugs. It is aimed at helping young people manage the risks they face.
Feedback about the kit was received and this is what was said:
Even the most responsible teens may suddenly find themselves in difficult positions. Perhaps their driver is stoned or drunk, their friends take off without them or they just feel uncomfortable and want to leave a party. One poor decision regarding the use of drugs and/or alcohol can put your child’s safety at risk. It’s important that teens feel comfortable calling and talking to an adult. Whether you are a parent, relative or friend, being there for a young person is powerful. -30-
