News Release For Immediate Release August 15, 2005
Second Human Probable Positive for West Nile Virus in Grey Bruce
The public health unit has received lab results indicating a second probable human case of West Nile Virus. The person is vacationing in the Inverhuron area but was recently living in a region of California that is reporting multiple positive cases.
We are pleased that this person in their early 70’s is doing well and expected to recover fully.
Public Health will be increasing mosquito surveillance in the Inverhuron area. To-date all birds and mosquitoes that have been collected in Grey Bruce have tested negative for the virus.
There have been five probable human cases in Ontario thus far this summer. The potential risks remain high; “Mosquitoes are reproducing rapidly due to the combination of rainfall and warm weather in recent weeks,” said Dr. Lynn. Individual awareness and protection continues to be a leading factor in the prevention of West Nile Virus. Prevent mosquito bites by avoiding mosquito-heavy areas at dusk, covering exposed skin with light-coloured clothing, checking doors and window screens for holes and cracks, and using mosquito repellents with DEET when outdoors. Report dead or ill birds to your local Public Health Unit, and eliminate mosquito breeding grounds by getting rid of standing water in still ponds, bird baths, roof gutters, and tire swings.
