News Release For Immediate Release July 29, 2005
First Human Probable Positive for West Nile Virus in Ontario This YearInitial tests indicate that a resident of Owen Sound has contacted West Nile Virus. This is the first probable human case identified in Ontario this year. Medical officer of Health Dr. Hazel Lynn says “We have not identified any birds or mosquitoes positive for West Nile Virus in Grey Bruce this year however, it appears that there are some positive mosquitoes in our area.” She adds, “While the risk of becoming seriously ill is low, avoiding mosquito bites is warranted.” West Nile Virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes get the virus by feeding on infected birds. Most people who are infected have no symptoms at all or have a mild illness such as fever, headache, muscle weakness or body aches. People over age 50 are more at risk of developing encephalitis (swelling of the brain). The Grey Bruce Health Unit has mosquito surveillance traps in the area where the resident lives and works. We are sampling standing water sites and will be working closely with the City of Owen Sound should any mosquito control measures be necessary.
When mosquitoes are active (dusk to dawn), residents should take the following steps:
If you find a dead crow please contact your local Public Health Unit. For more information on West Nile Virus visit the Public Health web site at www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca.
