Report released on new Sexual Assault Service for Grey and Bruce

The Bruce Grey Sexual Assault Program Planning Committee released its report and recommendations for the reestablishment of sexual assault services in Grey and Bruce.  The report was based on community consultations and an environmental scan conducted in July and August 2005.  Input came from women who used services, area service providers, government ministries, First Nations and members of the public, with over 160 people participating in the consultation process.

“The consultation this summer gave us a chance to hear directly from the community about what they value and need in sexual assault services” said Colleen Purdon, the project coordinator “It provided the Planning Committee with information on how the new service can be more accessible, better meet the needs of Aboriginal women, improve linkages with other agencies and remain accountable to women, partner organizations and the community.”

The consultation found a great deal of mistrust and confusion resulting from the abrupt closure of the Sexual Assault Centre, but also the potential for community partnerships to create a new service.   The report recommends:

  • Transparent and accountable governance
  • Policies and procedure to ensure diversity and culturally sensitive service
  • Safe and accessible main location and satellite offices
  • Collaboration among community partners to support sexually assaulted women and to end violence against women.

Two models for service delivery were proposed:  a single focus, free standing sexual assault service, or a sexual assault service within a multi-service organization with proven expertise in delivering Violence Against Women services.

A community stakeholders group, made up of organizations and groups involved in the delivery of violence against women services, and ministry representatives will meet on November 15th .  They will hear presentations from several local community groups interested in providing sexual assault services, and to discuss next steps in the community process.
