News Release For Immediate Release September 29, 2006
Gastrointestinal Outbreak in Owen Sound Hospital
The Grey Bruce Health Unit is currently investigating an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness (GI) at Grey Bruce Health Services – Owen Sound. This illness has caused significant vomiting and diarrhea in both patients and staff. This outbreak is limited to a single ward in the hospital (medical/surgical ward 4-1). To date, six patients and eight staff are known to be ill. Although the agent has yet to be identified, a Norwalk-like virus is suspected. Laboratory samples have been taken and results are pending.
Based on current information available to the Health Unit, the Grey Bruce area is not experiencing increased GI illness in the general community.
Visitors to the 4-1 unit during the time of September 20th to 27th, 2006 are encouraged to watch for the signs and symptoms of illness. Specifically, this illness can begin with sever headache followed by nausea and significant vomiting and diarrhea lasting up to 3 days. Illness is usually self-limiting and people are encouraged to stay home, stay well hydrated, limit contact with others and practice good personal hygiene technique. People should seek medical attention if they become dehydrated or have other complications. - 30 -
