News Release For Immediate Release July 12, 2007 Investigation of E Coli Outbreak Continues
The Day Away program at the Hanover and District Hospital will remain closed as the Grey Bruce Health Unit continues investigating an outbreak of E coli – 0157. Two new laboratory confirmed cases have developed as a result of secondary exposure. Both new cases had contact with infected individuals. Eight people were originally infected, four hospitalized, following an outbreak at the June 22, 2007 Day Away program. Three people remain in hospital, their condition improving. The Day Away program is expected to re-open July 20, 2007. The Grey Bruce Health Unit has worked with the operator, Home and Community Support Services, to ensure strict infection control protocols are in place. The Health Unit reminds everyone this is time of year when E coli is most common. The bacteria can be been found in raw or undercooked meats, raw milk and contaminated drinking water. Proper handling and cooking of these foods and practicing good personal hygiene, including washing hands, can reduce the risk of infection and secondary spread of disease.- 30 - For more information: |
