News Release For Immediate Release September 12, 2007
PLAY in Bruce Grey supports World Record Walk October 3, 2007
How many people does it take to break a world record? When it comes to walking, it takes 100,915 people...plus you!
The World Record Walk will take place simultaneously across Ontario and Canada at 12:30 p.m. EDT on October 3, 2007. The walk will be one kilometre, taking approximately 20 minutes to complete. Schools, communities and workplaces are urged to participate. It is anticipated that over 3,000 events will happen at the same time.
The current record was set in September 2006 by Western Australia with 100,915 participants.
World Record Walk activities are being coordinated across Grey Bruce by PLAY in Bruce Grey and local Community Action Networks. PLAY in Bruce Grey is committed to providing opportunities for play and physical activity for residents of Grey Bruce. Community Action Networks are volunteers in each municipality who are passionate about making their communities more play-friendly.
Grey Bruce has been challenged by Wellington Dufferin Guelph to determine which region can get the greatest proportion of their residents participating in the walk. In the spirit of this friendly competition, Bluewater District School Board has challenged Upper Grand District School Board and the Wellington Catholic District School Board has challenged the Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board for the greatest proportion of students walking. Municipalities, workplaces, community groups and schools across Grey Bruce are encouraged to issue their own challenges to raise enthusiasm for the walk.
Schools, workplaces or community group wanting to participate in the World Record Walk should call regional coordinator Jennifer Croft at Public Health, 519-376-9420 ext. 469.
