Seventh Annual “Stay on Your Feet” Tea
The Community Coalition for the Prevention of Falls in Older Adults and the Osprey Women’s Institute hosted the seventh annual “Stay on Your Feet” tea at the Maxwell Community Centre on Saturday May 3. Local MPP Bill Murdoch, Grey Highlands Mayor Brian Mullin and Councilor Lynn Silverton welcomed the audience. Dainty sandwiches made with calcium rich ingredients were served along with dessert. Guest presenter, Osteoporosis Canada, Bruce Dufferin Grey Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy, Area Manager Judy Porteous presented on “Speaking of Bones”. Porteous explained how important it is that young people build up their bone bank. The body uses calcium every day and if we are not taking it in with our diet or supplements, our bodies with take it from the bones. Porteous shared pictures of people affected by osteoporosis. She recommended that anyone who has lost height should ask their health care professional about bone density screening. Ending on a positive note, Porteous showed how it is never too late to take positive steps to preserve the bone mass that we do have. Anyone wishing to learn more about prevention and management of osteoporosis is invited to attend a two hour “Bone Health for Adults” information session at Lee Manor Auditorium, 875 6th St. East, Owen Sound on May 7th, 2008 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Guest speakers include Dr. Allan McDougall, Long Term Care Physician; Brenda Pawliw, Pharmacist with Medical Pharmacy; Beth Gillis, Physiotherapist & Sarah Dacey, Registered Dietitian both with “Closing the Gap” Health Care Group.
