I Promise Program

The I Promise Program is a safe driving program for families with new young drivers.

This program is free and available worldwide.

Car crashes are the main reason that young people die and are permanently injured.

Each year over 8,000 youth die because of car crashes in North America.

Over 400,000 suffer from physical injuries.

In Grey-Bruce, hospitalization rates due to motor vehicle collisions are higher than provincial rates for nearly all age groups.  What is particularly distressing is that injury rates from motor vehicle collisions in the 16 – 24 age group are 216% higher than the provincial average.

Youth, parents and community members developed the I Promise Program so that fewer young people would be hurt in car crashes.

There is:

  • A parent youth safe driving contract
  • A sign for the rear window of the car

How does the I Promise Program work?

  1. First, parents and youth talk about safe driving.  They agree on a safe driving contract.

Contract examples:

    • I promise to drive sober.
    • I promise to wear my seat belt.
    • I promise to drive defensively.
    • I promise to keep my mind on the road.

  1. Then, the parents and youth can affix the rear-window sign with their phone number to the family vehicle(s).

  1. Community members can make a report on the family driving by phoning directly to the family.

People in the community are just as likely to call about the parents, as they are to about the youth – depending on how each drives.
