Healthy Dads

Dads can play an important role in helping Moms grow healthy, smoke-free babies.  Two important things a Dad-to-be can do are:

  • help the Mom-to-be to quit smoking.

  • stop smoking around the Mom-to-be.

Helping Mom-to-be quit

It’s important to congratulate her on her decision to quit.  Providing support can include things like not smoking around her if you smoke, doing smoke-free activities with her, and helping her to arrange for counselling which can double or triple her chances of quitting for good.

Stop Smoking Around Mom-to-be

The best way to do this is to quit smoking yourself.  Not only are there health benefits for you, but you can support each other in fighting the temptation to smoke.  If you aren’t ready to quit smoking at this time, take it outside.  Make the decision to live in a smoke-free home and drive a smoke-free car for your baby’s future.  This will limit the Mom-to-be’s exposure to second-hand smoke, making the baby healthier.
