Second Hand SmokeIf you smoke, smoke outside
It has been known for many years that smoking cigarettes is dangerous to a smoker’s health. We now know that breathing in the smoke exhaled by the smoker, as well as the smoke from a burning cigarette, harms everyone’s health.
Breathing second-hand smoke indoors increases your risk of getting sick. It’s a chemical soup, packed full of 4000+ compounds.
Children are especially vulnerable to the dangerous effects of second-hand smoke. Many young children are exposed to second-hand smoke daily—whether at home, in the car, at their daycare providers’, or when visiting relatives like grandparents. They are much more likely to suffer from asthma, ear infections, bronchitis, and other illnesses.
Local data collected in 2003 reports that 63 per cent of households in Grey-Bruce are totally smoke-free. Seventy-three per cent of local drivers reported that smoking is not allowed in the vehicles they drive. One of the most important things you can do is to make your home and car smoke free. Your children will be healthier…in fact, everyone’s health will improve. |
