Making Your Home and Car Smoke-Free

It does matter where you smoke!  Since there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke, it’s best to smoke outside.   Opening a car window or smoking in another room won’t clear the air.

There are things you can do to protect you and your family from second-hand smoke:

Talk about it:

Sit down with everyone living in your home to talk about ways to make your home smoke-free.

Get ready:

  • Set up a smoking area outside.

  • Remove any ashtrays from inside the house.

  • Start smoking outside the home.

  • Try to cut down or quit smoking.

  • Call Public Health to receive a Smoke-free Home window decal.

Ask a smoker to take it outside:

  • Think about the smokers who will visit your home and think about how you will ask them to smoke outside.

  • Be polite, but firm.  Thank your friends and family for helping you keep your home smoke-free.

Also remember to:

  • Keep tobacco products, cigarette butts and lighters away from children at all times.

  • Choose day care providers who do not smoke in their homes or near your children.

  • Spend as little time as possible in smoky bars, restaurants or homes.

  • Try to share rides with non-smokers. Second-hand smoke in cars is more toxic than in a house because of the smaller space.

  • Support smoke-free air laws in workplaces and public places.
