Recreational Water

Injury and illness can result from bathing in recreational waters.  Regulations and guidelines set out minimum standards to provide clear, clean water and safe conditions for bathers in public swimming pools, spas, wading pools, and water slides. The Health Unit carries out an education and inspection program in these facilities.

Disease producing organisms such as Legionella and Pseudomonas can be present in hot tubs or spas. Our staff will provide advice to individuals operating a spa or swimming pool regarding proper disinfection levels and water chemistry. Operator Manuals for Spas and Public Swimming Pools are available for download.

Water at many public beaches is sampled during the summer months to monitor bacterial levels. Beaches are posted with warning signs when bacterial levels exceed standards set out by the Ministry of Health or where a risk to health is expected.
