Myth #1 – West Nile Virus is not a concern in Grey Bruce
Truth: West Nile Virus has been found in the bird population in Grey Bruce. Also, human cases of the virus have been identified.
Myth #2 – There is very little I can do to prevent West Nile Virus
Truth: Individuals can do a lot to protect themselves and their community from West Nile Virus.
Myth #3 – Children are at the greatest risk of developing severe symptoms of West Nile Virus
Truth: People over 50 years of age are at the greatest risk of developing severe symptoms of West Nile Virus. However, it is a good idea for people of all ages to take measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
Myth #4 – Only people in poor health are susceptible to West Nile Virus
Truth: Although having a compromised immune system increases the risk of developing severe symptoms, there have been cases of healthy older adults developing serious West Nile Virus illness.
Myth #5 – Mosquito repellents that contain DEET are not safe
Truth: Extensive research has shown that, when used according to their directions, repellents containing DEET are very safe. It is recommended that products containing DEET should not be applied to children under 6 months of age.
