Myth #2 – There is very little I can do to prevent West Nile Virus

Truth: Individuals can do a lot to protect themselves and their community from West Nile Virus.

  • Use a mosquito repellent containing DEET. Refer to the fact sheet about Mosquito Repellents for more information.
  • Wear lightly coloured long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors in areas with mosquitoes.
  • Pay special attention to personal protection or avoid being outside during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Ensure that screens on windows and doors are in good condition to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
  • Reduce standing water around your home. Check for standing water once a week and remove unused containers. Possible places where water may pool are flower pots, bird baths, rain gutters, and plastic containers.

Myth #5 – Mosquito repellents that contain DEET are not safe

Truth: Extensive research has shown that, when used according to their directions, repellents containing DEET are very safe. It is recommended that products containing DEET should not be applied to children under 6 months of age. Please refer to the Mosquito Repellent fact sheet, which discusses both DEET and non-DEET products.
