Student Health Centres are open to youth in secondary schools with the goal of increasing access to health education and health services. Confidential, one-on-one health education and coordination of health services are available for students.
School Health Public Health Nurses are present in all 13 high schools in the Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board and the Bluewater District School Board during the school year on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
Best practice guidelines for working with adolescents focus on providing better access to healthcare that prioritize building trusting relationships, involving youth in their care, and providing comprehensive, accessible services. PHNs work in partnership with youth's autonomy and individuality, while also supporting them through transitions to adulthood. Best practices show that when youth have access to in-school services it will lead to better health outcomes and ultimately contribute to healthier and better-educated youth. This service is especially important in our rural communities where access and transportation to health care services can be a barrier for our young people. School staff are encouraged to refer students who may need support from the PHN or alternatively, students are welcome to book their own appointment.
