Community Engagement

Community Building for Families

In partnership with Grey County, Bruce County and several other community agencies, the Grey Bruce Health Unit has been working with County-owned rent-geared-to-income neighbourhoods to support healthy, inclusive, and safe neighbourhoods for families. Developing trusting partnerships within these neighbourhoods continues to be paramount in building community capacity and mobilizing community assets. Working together towards a shared vision builds a foundation for community engagement.

In 2018, the Spotlight on Grey Bruce: Community Building for Families resource was developed to highlight collaborative efforts and achievements as part of the community engagement process. The resource is intended for service providers interested in community engagement as a strategy that influences health and well-being, reduces health disparities and supports positive change.

Community Conversation

In the summer of 2014, the Grey Bruce Health Unit, in partnership with the Tamarack Institute for Community Engagement, launched the Community Conversations Grey Bruce project. As part of a national campaign, the project aims to deepen community by facilitating conversations, generating themes and encouraging community action. Over the duration of the project (June 2014 - April 2015):

  • 47 community conversations were hosted
  • 407 individuals, representing more than 9 sectors and a range of ages participated
  • 100 participants attended one of 6 celebration gatherings to share highlights from the conversations

From the conversations, 6 themes were identified:

  • Local Economic Development: Growth and prosperity, stable jobs, vibrant downtown
  • Affordable Housing: Safe, accessible and affordable housing options for all
  • Enhanced Resources/Services: coordinated services, community hubs, education and training, high-speed internet, public transportation
  • Youth Retention: recreation, employment, sense of belonging, supporting youth to return “home” after education and training
  • Attracting Young Families: Making our communities welcoming to young families, employment and recreation services
  • Increased Social & Leisure Opportunities: activities for all ages, trails and parks, theatre and arts, festivals and celebrations, cultural opportunities
