Foundations for a Healthy School

The Foundations for a Healthy School resource is designed to help contribute to a learning environment that promotes and supports the child and student well-being – their cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development not just academic success. The research is clear; healthy students are better prepared to learn, and education is a key determinant of health.

The resource aligns with the K–12 School Effectiveness Framework (K-12 SEF) by including five interconnected areas that relate closely with the components of the K-12 SEF: Taking all of these five, interconnected areas into account will help schools, school boards, parents and community partners to work together to develop a comprehensive approach to healthy schools policies, programs and initiatives.

  1. Curriculum, Teaching & Learning
  2. School & Classroom Leadership
  3. Student Engagement
  4. Social & Physical Environments
  5. Home, School & Community Partnerships

Ontario Healthy Schools Coalition

The Ontario Healthy Schools Coalition advocates that every child and young person in Ontario be educated in a ‘healthy school’. A ‘healthy school’ promotes the physical, mental, social and spiritual health of the whole school community and constantly strengthens its capacity as a healthy setting for living, learning and working.
